What do you need to start freelancing as a beginner?
The process of becoming a freelancer consists of a few steps. It’s a process of learning, practicing, gaining real-life experience of skills, building a portfolio, and then starting to provide the services you learned as a professional freelancer.
The first step, learn a skill:
To start your journey as a freelancer, at the very first stage, you have to learn a skill that has demand in marketplaces.
You can choose a skill to learn from many different job categories. For instance, under the Writing category, you can learn and provide Content Writing, Copywriting, Ghostwriting, Scriptwriting, Editing and Proofreading, Technical Writing, Business Writing and there are many other options.
I would recommend you take a look at the job categories available on the Upwork listing to discover more options to choose a specific skill that you want to learn and move forward with.
Choose the job category that you will enjoy learning and doing for a long time and has the potential of earning money as a Freelancer.
After selecting the profession, you have to learn the basic skills required to get started.
For instance, if you have chosen Fron-End Web Development as your career, you need to learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a few frameworks to be able to start working on real projects.
It is okay to start providing easy services as a freelancer under the chosen category and you need to keep learning and growing your knowledge to broaden your potential and opportunities in the process.
If you choose Data Entry as your profession, you have to learn the basics of Microsoft Office tools – such as MS Word, and Excel and you need to have basic web research skills to move forward and start providing freelance services to clients.
Whatever profession you’re choosing, firsthand, you need knowledge, skill, and experience about the subject.
To achieve this, you have to study blogs, join communities and forums, watch video lessons, practice, and grow.
You can learn any skill from the premium course for free for the next 30 days on Skillshare. I have a sponsored link for you.
Step two, work on demo projects:
After learning the basics of the required tools for the profession you have chosen, you need to get knowledge of relevant job types available on freelance marketplaces. Simply visit the freelancing platforms, and look for job postings made by clients.
Read the job descriptions and see what you’re able to do already, and what you need to learn to become job-ready.
Then, you need to work on a few demo projects to gain experience and build your portfolio – which you can add to your freelance profiles as proof of your experience and you can attach the works while you apply for jobs on any marketplace.
That’s all you need!
Skill in a subject, practice, and portfolio…
Step three, finding clients:
After having skills on a specific subject, and having your portfolio done – you are ready to start finding clients to provide services as a freelancer.
The most popular freelance marketplaces are Upwork, and Fiverr.
Join the marketplaces, set up your profiles start applying for suitable jobs.
It’s time to write convincing cover letters while you apply for the jobs, which will help you land your first freelance job.
After being hired on a project, your task is to complete the project according to the client’s needs and deliver the final output.
If the client accepts the work delivered by you, your project will be marked as completed and the marketplace will release the payment to your account balance – which you can withdraw to your local Bank Account, Paypal, Payoneer, or Wise account.
And, this is it.
This is exactly how freelancing works in all and how you can start your career as a Freelancer.
